According to authorities, the first crash occurred when a semi-truck hauling a tanker of diesel fuel slowed due to traffic conditions on westbound US-10. A Nissan Rogue traveling behind failed to stop in time and rear-ended the semi-truck, triggering a devastating chain-reaction crash involving another vehicle.
Emergency responders arrived at the scene and worked quickly to assist those involved. Tragically, Malik Manuel, a young passenger in the Nissan Rogue, sustained fatal injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene. His mother, who was driving the vehicle, was transported to a hospital with life-threatening injuries, leaving a family facing an unimaginable loss.
As authorities managed the aftermath of the initial crash and traffic remained backed up, a second fatal collision occurred later that morning in the same westbound lanes. Investigators report that a Ford Focus approached stopped traffic but failed to slow down, striking a box truck and causing another multi-vehicle crash.
