A tragic incident on Highway 401 near Port Hope, Ontario, has claimed the life of a driver who was struck after exiting his parked vehicle on the highway shoulder, according to the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP).
Investigators report that the incident occurred after the driver pulled over and stopped on the shoulder of the busy highway. For reasons that remain under investigation, the individual exited his vehicle and was subsequently struck by a passing vehicle that also collided with the parked car.
Emergency services responded swiftly to the scene, where paramedics provided urgent medical care before transporting the victim by air ambulance to a trauma centre in Toronto. Despite advanced medical intervention and efforts to stabilize him, he later died from his injuries.
The OPP confirmed that the driver of the second vehicle involved in the collision remained at the scene and is fully cooperating with investigators. At this stage, no additional injuries have been reported, and authorities have not indicated any criminal charges as the investigation continues.
Police have closed or restricted sections of Highway 401 in the affected area at various points to allow collision reconstruction specialists to document the scene, gather evidence, and analyze vehicle positions, road conditions, and visibility factors.
